Passage 1
Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:
The eyes themselves can send several kinds of messages. Meeting someone’s glance (目光) with your eyes is usually a sign of interest, while looking away often shows a desire of disinterest. As we mentioned earlier, this is why salespersons on the street try to catch our eye. Once they’ve managed to have contact with a glance, it becomes harder for the coming person to draw away. A friend explained how to use this rule to get a ride. “When I’m trying to get a ride, I’m always careful to look somewhere else as they pass, but if I can catch somebody’s eye, he’ll almost always stop.” Most of us remember trying to avoid a question we didn’t understand by glancing away from the teacher. At times like these we usually became very interested in our textbooks, fingers, the clock — anything but the teacher’s stare. Of course, the teacher always seemed to know the meaning of this behavior, and ended up calling on those of us who showed our worry.
Another kind of message the eyes express is a double attitude. When someone glances toward us with the proper expression on the face, we get a clear message that the looker is interested in us — so we have the expression “making eyes”. At the same time, when our long glances toward someone else are avoided by her, we can be sure that the other person isn’t as interested in us as we are in her.
The eyes express both control and being controlled. We’ve all played the game of trying to stare down somebody, and in real life there are also times when down-staring eyes are a sign of giving in. In some church (教会) orders, for example, members in lower positions are expected to keep their eyes down when speaking to members in higher positions.
6. If you want to show your disinterest to a salesperson, you’d better ______________.
A. look him in the eyes
B. not have contact with the person’s glance
C. pass the person quickly
D. send a message through your eyes
7. According to the writer’s friend, it’s easier to get a ride if you ______________.
A. look somewhere else
B. are careful
C. catch the driver’s eye
D. wave your hand
8. If some students seem to be very interested in their fingers in class, it shows that ________.
A. they are afraid of being called on by the teacher
B. their fingers need cleaning
C. they want to answer the teacher’s questions very much
D. the teacher has stared at them for too long a time
9. “Making eyes” in Paragraph 2 probably means ___________.
A. catching each other’s eye
B. attracting one’s attention
C. looking at someone in a way that shows your interest
D. noticing that something interesting has happened
10. The best title for this passage is ___________
A. Meeting Someone’s Glance B. Messages of Our Eyes
C. The Eyes of Human Being D. Making Eyes
Passage 2
Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:
Muggs was the worst of all my dogs. He always acted as if he thought I wasn’t one of the family. There was an advantage in being one of the family, for he didn’t bite the family as often as he bit strangers.
In his last years Muggs used to spend almost all his time outdoors. As a result the garbage man, the iceman and the laundryman(洗衣工)wouldn’t come near the house. We had to drag the garbage down to the corner, take the laundry out and bring it back, and meet the iceman away from home. After this had gone on for some time we hit on a good idea for getting the dog into the house so that we could lock him up while others needed to come inside the house. Muggs was afraid of only one thing, thunder and lightning. It frightened him out of his senses. He would rush into the house and hide under a bed or in a clothes closet. So we made a thunder machine out of a long narrow piece of iron with a wooden handle on one end. Mother would shake this with all her strength when she wanted Muggs into the house. I suppose it was the most complex system for running a household that was ever devised. It took a lot out of Mother.
11. If you were a member of the family, you had the “advantage” of_________?

D. we felt excited about a good idea
