SOCIAL WORKERS
Social workers help people overcome problems and make their lives better. If
people are homeless, sick, or having family problems, social workers will work
with them. If students have trouble in school, social workers help them too.
Social workers help these people in different ways. One way is to find
resources for people. They find out what kinds of help people need. Then, they
set up programs to meet the needs of the individual12. They may focus on child
abuse, poverty, violence, and other problems. For someone with family
difficulties, social workers may find a parenting class or a support group.
For a homeless person, they may find a place for them to live and a career
training program. For a student, they may find a mentor or a learning
disability expert.
Many social workers give counseling. They talk to people about their lives and
help them understand and solve their problems and to make plans.
Most social workers spend the day in an office. Some travel to the people they

Now read the passageand decide if the following statements are TRUE (T) or
FALSE (F).
HELPING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS MAKE FRIENDS
One study in the United States found that thirty-eight percent of foreign
students said they had no close American friends.
Elisabeth Gareis teaches in the Department of Communication Studies at Baruch
College in New York. She says efforts on how to improve relationships between
foreign and American students have yet to be studied in detail. But she says
these efforts should begin with the college or university, and that these
institutions have been working harder.
Ms. Gareis suggests that students should be encouraged to take part in
different activities, such as taking walks, going on bike rides, field or
camping trips, and attending parties, sporting events or film festivals. She
says such activities should be held repeatedly throughout the school term to
bring students together. She also suggests that foreign students share housing
with American students.
She says if the new students make friends as they begin school, they will come
to feel part of the life and traditions of the university, as well as create
long lasting friendships throughout their university career.

THREE THINGS TO BRING YOU MORE FRIENDS
Do you lack friends? Do you want to make more friends? If so, you may read
on…
There's a certain beauty in being a lone wolf. You have more time to do the
things you want to do. But if you want to make more friends, and do things
together with them, please consider these suggestions on how to meet people
and form strong, lasting friendships.
Spend more time around people and talk to them. If you want to make friends,
you first need to put yourself out in order to meet people. Friends seldom
come knocking on your door while you sit at home playing computer games.
Participate in an online community. You don't necessarily need to have a lot
of common interests with people in order to make friends with them. Social
networking sites such as Wechat, Facebook, Twitter, and My Space are great way
to meet new people and learn more about the people you meet.
Join a sports team. A common misunderstanding about this is that you have to
be really good at playing a particular sport in order to make friends with
others on the team, but not all teams are so competitive. As long as you enjoy
the sport and support your teammates, joining a local team could be a great
way to make new friends.

LETTER 1
Dear Ann,
I am going to give a dinner party next month. I want my guests to enjoy
themselves and to feel comfortable. What is the secret of giving a successful
party?
Sarah
LETTER 2
Dear Mary,
Cook something that would let you spend time with your guests. If a guest
offers to help you in the kitchen, accept the offer. It often makes people
feel more comfortable when they can help.
Before serving dinner, while your guests make small talks in the living room,
offer them drinks. Some guests may like wine, but make sure to provide soft
drinks for people who don’t.
At the dinner table, let your guests serve themselves. Offer them a second
serving after they finish, but don’t ask more than once. Most guests will
take more if they want.
Perhaps the most important rule of all is to be natural. Treat your guests as
you want them to treat you when you’re in their home—that is, act naturally
toward them, and don’t try too hard to be polite. Have a good time in a
pleasant atmosphere.
Yours,
Vida

A CAR STOPPED JUST IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET
Joan has been charged with a misdemeanor by asking her 13-year-old son to
drive, putting her child in a dangerous situation. It was Joan's 32nd birthday,
so she decided to go out for dinner with her 35-year-old boyfriend, Donald, as
well as her 13-year-old son, Mike. Joan was so happy that she drank two
bottles of wine with her boyfriend. When it was time to go home, both Joan and
Donald were too drunk to drive. They knew it clearly that both of them
couldn't drive home safely after that much wine, so they sat in the back seat
and asked Mike, Joan's 13-year-old son, to drive the 2008 Land Rover.
Being a driver for the first time in his life, Mike could receive no help from
his mom or Donald. They were too drunk to tell him clearly what to do. He
started the car nervously, but when he realized he couldn't control the car at
all, he was scared and depressed. He decided to stop the car and refuse to
drive any further. He called the police for help. When the police arrived,
they found the car was stopped right in the middle of the street.

HOW TO HELP VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Domestic violence is a very painful experience for those who have to go
through it. The victims often have very low self-esteem. They tend to blame
themselves for the abuse and make excuses for the abuser. Great patience and
understanding are needed in order to help these victims. Then how do we deal
with domestic violence?
Firstly, {A; B; C; D; E}. If someone you know has unexplained injuries or
seems fearful of other people in the household, she may be a victim of
domestic violence.

she is in a difficult situation. Do not simply ask her to leave her abuser. It
will not help the situation. It will make her feel more alone and bad.
Thirdly, {A; B; C; D; E}. Listen to everything the victim has to say, and do
not try to give any judgment. Let the victim know that you are available to
help.
Fourthly,{A; B; C; D; E}. Encourage the victim to take part in events and
activities outside of the abusive relationship. Besides, provide them with
information for anti-abuse programs.
Last but not least, {A; B; C; D; E}. You can always call the local Domestic
Violence Help Center for help and advice.

A SPEECH ABOUT MY HOMETOWN
My lovely hometown is located on the south shore of an island. It's a small
town with only about 9,000 people and an area of about 3.8 square miles.
First, I want to talk about the people in the neighborhood. Generally speaking,
people are very nice here, especially in summer. I feel that in summer
everyone is in a great mood, and very generous. For example, one summer
afternoon, I was at the gas station filling up my car and was short of money.
Generously an old gentleman gave me the money to pay the gas attendant. That's
the type of people you can expect from my hometown.
The greatest part about the town, in my opinion, is the location. The Great
Bay is five minutes away from my house and it's fantastic. Another great thing
is how close everybody lives to each other. With it being such a small town,
all my friends live five minutes away, which is a great advantage to me and
everyone else. Lastly, the nightlife is great. On any Saturday night every bar
is packed with people, so there's always something going on.
So far I've explained the good side of my hometown, but there are also some
boring things about it. It is great in summer, but it is a different story in
winter. When winter comes around, the town turns into a “ghost town”. This
is because there is nowhere to go. The only thing we have is a shopping center.
It would be nice if we had a few more options to choose from.

Lilian Hanson, a college students, expects to graduate in about two years.
What makes Mrs. Hanson different from her classmates is her age—73 years. She
has been studying at college, a few courses at a time, for 27 years.
When Lilian Hanson graduated from high school, she went to the bank to borrow
money for the further education. The banker gave her no encouragement. He
didn't think that a country girl should borrow money to go to college. He
thought she should be at home doing work in the house or around the farm. So
Lilian Hanson went home and raised a family of nine children instead of going
to college. Mrs. Hanson never forgot her dream of getting a higher education.
When her children were grown, she tried again.
She finds the hardest part of going back to school at her age is to sit in
class for long periods of time. Because she is not as quick as she used to be,
Mrs. Hanson often gets up and walks around classes to keep from getting stiff
(僵硬). At the beginning of a course in using the computer, the other students
all stood up to give her a warm welcome when she introduced herself and
explained why she was there and what her aims were.

MY VOLUNTEERING EXPERIENCE
My volunteer work helps me grow up. It has made me more aware of the
difficulties other people go through and made me appreciate the simple things
we have in life. It enables me, as an adult, to become more confident and to
realize the difference I can make.
I now have new career aspirations and the confidence to take forward these new
ideas, since I started mentoring at the Open University and gained experience
of working with young students. I'll go on to do a teaching assistant course
and looking to go into volunteering teaching or youth work in the future.
My research project will be to build a spatial web application. It was
inspired by the volunteering I do for another not-for-profit organization.
My volunteering at an animal shelter is neither connected to my studies nor to
my career interests. I do it purely for pleasure, satisfaction and the feeling
that I can help somebody. It's made me a happier person, and I wouldn't have
got this far at university without it.

WHY VOLUNTEER?
Volunteering is a great way to get work experience, and may be one of the most
valuable experiences of your life. You learn new skills by trying new jobs.
Better yet, you can meet people who can give you guidance and possibly help
you to find a paid job later on. Employers will be impressed that you took the
initiative to learn new things. You can learn how a charitable organization
works. Best of all, you will be taking action to promote what you think is
important and probably be helping someone else along the way.
Instead of considering volunteering as something you do for people who are not
as fortunate as yourself, begin to think of it as an exchange. Consider that
most people find themselves in need at some point in their lives. You may be
the person with the ability to help today, but tomorrow you may be someone who
needs others' help. Even now you might be on both sides of the service cycle:
maybe you are a tutor for someone who can't read, while last month the
volunteer ambulance corps rushed you to the emergency room. Volunteering also
includes “self-help.” So if you are active in your neighborhood crime watch,
your home is protected while you protect your neighbors' homes, too. It's a
double win: your community or cause benefits from your work and you benefit
from your experiences. In a word, adding your effort to the work of others
makes everyone's lives better.

MY VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE AT THE YOUTH SERVICES CENTER LIBRARY
My experience at the library included{assisted; assisting; assist}kids during
their library visit in a number of ways—reader's advisory, working with the
kids during library skills sessions, and checking{out; up; in}books. Of all of
these experiences, working through problems with the kids during library
skills sessions was{/; more; most}rewarding. Some of the library skills
sessions were on the computer and others were using print sources like
newspapers and encyclopedias.
Reader's advisory for the kids was also rewarding. Through the recommendations
of Jill Morrison, the YSCL's head librarian, and also talking with the kids
themselves, I read quite a few young adult titles. Doing this reading and also
reading other reviews of juvenile  literature{enabled; made; let}me to give
the kids recommendations for books they might enjoy.
One afternoon a high school-aged girl approached me{asking for; asking about;
asking}books about college. She wanted to get all of the information that she
could on college admission processes. Together using the library's webcat, we
found some useful books for her. We also found some relevant websites. At the
beginning of my experience at the YSCL, I felt that if I came away making a
difference for only one person, I had succeeded. This young woman was so
appreciative and enthusiastic about the information we found together that I
think I met my goal.

The first year of school in America, known as kindergarten, usually begins
between the ages of five and six. Among rich countries such a late start is
very strange. President Obama believes it is an economic and social problem;
his education secretary goes as far as to say that it is "morally wrong”.
This statement has some support, as it is clear from research into vocabulary
that youngsters from poor families enter kindergarten well behind those from
rich families—a disadvantage that usually lasts a lifetime. Children from
households on welfare knew 525 words by the age of three, while the children
of professionals had mastered 1,116.
Pre-school can help close this gap. So in a speech last month, Mr. Obama
called for a partnership between the federal government and the states to
expand it to every American child. It later became known that "every" meant
those who come from families with incomes of up to 200% above the poverty
line—equal to an income of $47,000 for a family of four.
Some critics say that sending children to school at the age of four does not
work. The evidence suggests otherwise. For example, on March 20thnew results
were announced from a study of 9 to 11 year olds in New Jersey. This report
found that disadvantaged children who had attended pre-school had better
literacy (读写能力), language, maths and science skills. And two years of pre-
kindergarten were better than one.
Some studies also follow the effects of early learning over lifetimes, such as
its effect on crime rates and other factors that may eventually burden society.
Critics have singled out a government scheme called Head Start, created in
1965, which provides poor households with a range of services including
school-based early education.

WHAT DO YOU SAY IN A COVER LETTER?
A cover letter is a letter of introduction sent along with a résumé or
curriculum vitae (CV). How do you write a successful cover letter? Bear these
points in mind, and you'll always make a great impression.
Keep your cover letter brief and to the point. Writing more than one page is
usually unnecessary. If it is sent in an email, writing three short paragraphs
is quite sufficient.
Explain why you are sending a résumé. Don't make the reader guess what you are
asking for.
Tell specifically how you learned about the position or the organization – a
flyer posted in your department, a web site, a family friend who works at the
organization, etc.
Convince the reader to look at your résumé. The cover letter will be seen
first. Therefore, it must be very well written and targeted to that employer.
Call attention to your background – education, leadership, experience – that
is relevant to the position you are seeking.
Provide any information specifically requested in the job advertisement that
might not be covered in your résumé, such as availability date, or references.

It can be really frustrating (使人沮丧的) for an overweight person to go to a
gym and work out with a positive attitude. All one has to do is walk by almost
any nice gym and notice all the healthy, sweating, “skinny” members.
Sometimes they stare at those of us who are, well, zaftig. It is easy to see
the judgment behind their eyes. Who wants to put up with that?
Many people are self-conscious of their bodies and feel isolated when joining
workout classes of while exercising, especially if they are larger than most
of the others in the group. Now the fitness industry is finally paying
attention. Popular gyms are catering (迎合) to overweight and weight conscious
customers by dedicating areas where the “skinny” people are not allowed.
There are even gyms or programs that require members to be at least 50 pounds
overweight to participate.
Trainers recommend functional fitness as a practical goal, rather than six-
pack abs(六块腹肌). (79)They often use text messages to stay in touch with
customers.
Often at these specialized gyms, the trainers are overweight themselves, or
working on their own weight goals, and this can help those people with anxiety
caused by poor body image. The equipment has been designed for use by larger
people. Wider seats, more cushioning, no mirrors, and tinted (有色的) windows
for privacy, are all important changes.
(80)Hopefully these types of gyms will successfully grow in numbers in the
future. The idea is a very simple and potentially popular one. If it helps
those of us who are bigger exercise more and improve our fitness level, it's a
step in the right direction.

The Internet has been perhaps the greatest innovation in information
technology. It has become an important tool with many advantages.
First, the Internet is a treasure house of information and knowledge on any
topic. It is common practice now to search the web for resources and
information for homework, office presentations, work projects and studies, etc.
Second, there are more and more massive open online courses (MOOCs). These
MOOCs make it possible for people to carry out their learning any place around
the world, and any time around the clock. As long as the learners have access
to a digital device which is linked up to the Internet, they can enjoy
browsing the pages or watching video lectures. In doing so, they have
opportunities to learn from professors they otherwise would not be able to
access.
Third, entertainment is one of the leading reasons people like the Web.
Listening to music, playing games, watching movies, following the latest news
about famous sports stars, movie stars and singers and looking into lifestyle
websites have become day-to-day activities of many Internet users.
One cannot imagine a social life without QQ or WeChat. These social apps have
become our means for staying connected with friends, colleagues and family

THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNET
Many people are surprised when they find that the Internet was{set up; set off;
set forth}in the 1960s. At that time, computers were large and expensive.
Computer network didn't work well. If one computer in the network{broke out;
broke through; broke down} , then the whole network stopped. So a new network
system had to be set up. It should be good enough to be used by many different
computers. If part of the network was not working, information could be sent
through{another; the other; other}part. In this way computer network system
would keep on working on the time.
At first the Internet was only used by the government, but in the
early{nineteen seventy; 1970s; 1970}, universities,hospitals and banks were
allowed to use it too. However, computers were still very expensive and the
Internet was difficult to use. By the start of the 1990s, computers
became{more expensive; smaller; cheaper}and easier to use. Scientists had also
developed software that made “surfing” in the Internet more convenient.

{A; B; C; D; E; F}as well as the make, color and model of the vehicle. If

into moving traffic.

A pedestrian was critically injured in a Westwood area car accident near the
corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Veteran Avenue early morning on January 5,
2016.
The police said it involved a hit-and-run driver. The car was dark and was
last seen traveling east on Ashton Avenue from Veteran Avenue. The
investigation is ongoing.
It appears that the driver struck and seriously injured the pedestrian, and
left the victim lying in the roadway without even stopping to help or call
emergency personnel. Outrageous! Leaving the scene of an injury or fatal crash
is a serious crime under California law. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a)
states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury
to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall
immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”
We hope the driver in this case is arrested and brought to justice. If you
have any information about the suspect or the vehicle, please visit the Hit-
and-Run Reward website at hitandrunreward.com to offer a useful tip and become
qualified for a $1,000 reward.

A lawyer friend of mine has devoted herself to the service of humanity. Her
special area is called“public interest law”(公共利益法).
Many other lawyers serve only clients who can pay high fees. All lawyers have
had expensive and highly specialized training, and they work long, difficult
hours for the money they get. But what happens to people who need legal (法律
上的) help and cannot pay these lawyers' fees?
Public interest lawyers fill this need. Patricia, like other public interest
lawyers, gets less money than some lawyers, because she is willing to take
less money. Her clients have the help they need, even if they can pay nothing
at all.
Some clients need legal help because stores have cheated them with bad goods.
Others are in unsafe houses. Their cases are called“civil”cases. Still
others are criminals (刑事犯罪), and they go to those public interest lawyers
who are in charge of“criminal”cases.
These are just a few of the many situations in which the men and women who are
public interest lawyers serve to extend justice (正义) throughout our society.

CAUSES FOR JUVENILE DELINQUENCY
Juvenile Delinquency refers to criminal acts committed by children or
teenagers, specifically anyone below the age of eighteen. These crimes hurt
society and the children themselves.
There are many factors that cause juvenile delinquency.
Some children want to test their parents' or society's limits. Sometimes
juvenile crimes happen because of a lack of rules and supervision. For example,
many times children commit crimes after school and while their parents are at
work.
Additionally, mental illness and substance abuse are main factors. 15-20% of
juveniles convicted of crimes have serious mental illnesses, when the range of
mental illnesses widens, the percentages increase to 30-90%.
Also, many people believe, a child's environment and family are greatly
related to their juvenile delinquency record. For example, the dynamics of a
family can affect a child's delinquency rate.
Poverty level is another factor.
Finally, another cause could be the relationships a child grows in school or
outside of school. A positive or negative friendship can influence the chances
of children becoming delinquents. Peer pressure is also at play. Relationships
and friendships can lead to gangs, these are major factors in violent crimes
among teens.
These are just some of the causes of juvenile delinquency.

CHINA CALLS FOR UNIFIED INTERNATIONAL RULES AGAINST INTERNET CRIME
Cyber security has always been a serious issue as the internet industry is
ever growing. Nowadays, people can easily connect to the Internet with a
simple click of a mouse. But the global network can be easily destroyed by a
single leak. The world is facing a difficult situation in keeping web security.
Currently, there are no unified international rules for maintaining internet
security. China has called for unified international rules against internet
crime. Last year China (and some other countries) handed in a draft Code of
Conduct on Information Security to the UN.
World leaders and experts discussed the possible internet threats facing the
world. They agreed that the only way to deal with internet security threats
was to trust each other and strengthen cooperation. The threats cannot be
solved by any one country alone. And for these reasons, countries would have a
greater chance of trusting each other in dealing with such threats.
Though great efforts were made to issue common regulations for the internet,
few results have been achieved yet. There's still a long way to go for unified
global internet security rules and regulations.

Most couples who get married or decide to live together generally plan to have
children. Several years ago, people thought that having big families was
common and this was seen as an advantage. That was mainly because children
began working at an early age to help provide for the family. But with the
changing times and with the cost of living getting higher every single year,
having a big family is no longer considered to be a practical option. In fact,
more couples consider that they have only one child and some do not have any
desire to become parents at all.
According to the Australian Institute of Family Studies, by 1986, women aged
40 to 44 years, were considerably more likely to have given birth to two
children than three children (36% vs. 27%) or four or more children (19%).
However, taken together, women were still more likely to have had three or
more children than to have had two children (46% vs. 36%).
In recent years, women were more likely to have had two children than three or
more children – a trend that was most marked in the most recent period (38%
vs. 25% in 1996; 38% vs. 22% in 2006). These days, most families in Australia
have two children. But the number of women who had GIVEN BIRTH TO a single
child INCREASED PROGRESSIVELY from only 8% in 1981 to 13% in 2006.
The U.S. Census Bureau states that there are approximately 14 million only
children in America today. This COMPRISES 20% OF the children's population
COMPARED TO only 10% around fifty years ago.

STOPPING YELLING AT YOUR KIDS
Parenting is hard. If you're a parent, I'm sure that I don't need to tell you
that our job is a tough one. When you're managing children, it can be
difficult to remember that they are still learning. If you find you are
yelling at your kids more often than you want to, here are some ways that can
help you reduce the yelling. I've been working on this for the past few months
and I have to say, it's been amazing for both the kids and me.
If you are having an argument with your child, you need to make sure you both
take the time to really listen. It gives both of you time to think and really
listen to each other, which is important. Kids are more likely to listen to
you if you listen to them!
One of your biggest struggles is to remind yourself of appropriate
expectations. You can't expect that your youngest acts as responsibly as your
oldest. You should lower what you expect – taking into consideration things
like their age – it can make a big difference.
You should do your best to take a moment before yelling and take in a deep
breath. It makes a world of difference for you. Instead of yelling, you'd
better whisper. It can also help diffuse any situation by making things
quieter, not louder. Besides, the more time you spend with your kids, the
better you'll get at communicating with them. You're both more likely to
understand each other.
If your children aren't listening or it seems they only don't listen to you,
you don't take it personally. You should remind yourself that your kids are
still learning and they're not going to be perfect.

DEMAND FOR ELDERLY CARE SERVICES IN CHINA RISING RAPIDLY
The number of elderly people aged above 60 increased. Demand for elderly care
services in China will continue to rise due to the increasing aging population.
The number of elderly people aged above 60 was over 200 million in 2012, and
will be 300 million in 2025 and 400 million in 2034, according to experts.
It will be a tough challenge for China to deal with, due to the increasing
rates of urbanization and a DECREASING birth rate. The Chinese people will be
facing a big challenge if we do not have enough money when we get older.
The United Nations defines an aging society as one that has 10 percent of its
population at or above the age of 60.
When most developed countries were classed as an aging society, their gross
domestic product (GDP) per capita stood at between 5,000 to 10,000 U.S.
dollars or above. However, China became an aging society in 2001, and its GDP
per capita was only 1,000 U.S. dollars. It was 6,000 U.S. dollars in 2012.
China’s economic foundation for an elderly society is fragile.
On Sept. 13.2013, the State Council issued a guideline to speed up the
development of China’s elderly care services, hoping to complete a social
care network for its elderly by 2025.

Among the more colorful characters of Leadville's golden age were H.A.W. Tabor
and his second wife, Elizabeth McCourt, better known as “Baby Doe”. Their
history is fast becoming one of the legends of the Old West. Horace Austin
Warner Tabor was a school teacher in Vermont. With his first wife and two
children he left Vermont by covered wagon in 1855 to homestead in Kansas.
Perhaps he did not find farming to his liking, or perhaps he was lured by
rumors of fortunes to be made in Colorado mines. At any rate, a few years
later he moved west to the small Colorado mining camp known as California
Gulch, which he later renamed Leadville when he became its leading citizen.
“Great deposits of lead are sure to be found here.” he said.
As it turned out, it was silver, not lead, that was to make Leadville's
fortune and wealth. Tabor knew little about mining himself, so he opened a
general store, which sold everything from boots to salt, flour, and tobacco.
『It was his custom to “grubstake” prospective miners, in other words, to
supply them with food and supplies, or “grub”, while they looked for ore, in
return for which he would get a share in the mine if one was discovered. He
did this for a number of years, but no one that he aided ever found anything
of value.
Finally one day in the year 1878, so the story goes, two miners came in and
asked for “grub”. Tabor had decided to quit supplying it because he had lost
too much money that way. These were persistent, however, and Tabor was too
busy to argue with them. “Oh help yourself. One more time won't make any
difference,” He said and went on selling shoes and hats to other customers.
The two miners took $17 worth of supplies, in return for which they gave Tabor
a one-third interest in their findings. They picked a barren place on the
mountain side and began to dig. After nine days they struck a rich vein of
silver. Tabor bought the shares of the other two men, and so the mine belonged
to him alone. This mine, known as the “Pittsburgh Mine,” made 1 300 000 for
Tabor in return for his $17 investment.
Later Tabor bought the Matchless Mine on another barren hillside just outside
the town for $117 000. This turned out to be even more fabulous than the
Pittsburgh, yielding $35 000 worth of silver per day at one time. Leadville
grew. Tabor became its first mayor, and later became lieutenant governor of
the state.

The law defines youthful offenders (age 18 or under) as “delinquent” if they
commit offenses. As for the same offenses, the court would consider an adult
as a “criminal”. “Status offenders” are juveniles who commit offenses
appropriate only to juveniles, such as truancy from school. Here are a few
ideas to help prevent your children from being a delinquent.
Keep your children in school to help prevent delinquency. Minor offenses, such
as truancy, can lead to more serious offenses. Make clear to your children
your expectations about their school attendance. Meet with school officials if
necessary.
Exercise adequate supervision. Juveniles rarely commit serious offenses while
under the supervision of an adult. Seek the assistance of your local service
agencies if you feel you cannot control your children. Attend parenting
classes, or join a local support group if you are having trouble understanding
how to exercise discipline.
Educate your children about the dangers of drugs. Drug offenses and addiction
can have serious consequences for your children. Let your children know you
will not tolerate drug use. Stay informed about drug use trends in children.
Get your children involved in after-school recreational activities, sports,
community service or other positive activities. Young people with positive
outlets for their energy are more likely to do well in school and avoid the
problems of delinquency.
Know who your children's friends are. Show an interest in your children's
social life and peer groups. Peer pressure may have a bad effect on teenagers
and young people. Do not allow your children to associate with juvenile
delinquents.

ENGLISH, THE GLOBAL LANGUAGE
English is spoken as a native language by around 377 million people, and as a
second language by around 375 million speakers in the world. Speakers of
English as a second language will soon outnumber those who speak it as a first
language. Around 750 million people are believed to speak English as a foreign
language. English has an official or a special status in 75 countries with a
total population of over 2 billion.
The domination of the English language globally is a sure thing. English is
the language of international communications, business, tourism, education,
science, computer technology, media and the Internet.
British colonialism in the 19th century and American capitalism and
technological progress in the 20th century were undoubtedly the main causes
for the spread of English throughout the world. From the fifteenth century,
the British began to sail all over the world and became explorers, colonists
and imperialists. They took the English language to many places. For the last
hundred years, the USA has played a leading role in most parts of the world.
The Hollywood film industry also attracted many foreign artists in quest of
fame and fortune and the number of American films produced every year soon
flooded the market.
However, the future of English as a global language will depend very largely
on the political, economic, demographic and cultural trends in the world.

A passenger told an air hostess that he needed a cup of water to take his
medicine when the plane just took off. She told him that she would bring him
the water in ten minutes.
The air hostess was kept so busy that she forgot to give him the water. As a
result, the passenger was held up to take his medicine. Thirty minutes later,
when the passenger's ring for service sounded, she hurried over to him with a
cup of water, but he refused.
In the following hours on the plane, each time the air hostess passed by the
passenger, she would ask him with a smile whether he needed help or not. But
the passenger never answered a word.
When he was going to get off the plane, the passenger asked the air hostess to
hand him the passengers' booklet. She was very sad. She knew that he would
write down sharp words, but with a smile she handed it to him.
Off the plane, she opened the booklet, and smiled, for the passenger put it.
“On the flight, you asked me whether I needed help or not for twelve times in

FREE MASSIVE ONLINE OPEN COURSES (MOOCS)
A class with hundreds or even thousands of students might sound like a
teacher's worst nightmare. But a big idea in higher education these days is
Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs.
Some universities offer free, non-credit MOOCs available to anyone in the
world. Others charge for courses and provide credits. The idea is still
developing. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology started its first MOOC
in 2012. The school plans to offer many free, non-credit courses through a
project called MITx. Many Chinese universities are beginning to offer free
MOOCs now too.
Nowadays, MOOCs almost cover every topic, like computer science, technology,
mechanics, engineering, languages, etc.
Generally speaking, there are no formal education requirements for these free
online courses. Students watch short videos. Then, they take informal,
ungraded quizzes after the videos each week for certain weeks. Quizzes are
part of the lecture program to keep students engaged and keep them thinking,
for students to be able to check that they understood what was covered. They
can repeatedly watch the videos and take the quizzes whenever they want.
Students receive homework. They can join online groups to exchange questions
and answers about the courses. The teachers hold virtual office hours to
answer questions that the students have posted. They also present their own
questions and observations.
Some supporters claimed that there are things that we can do better in the
online format. We can certainly deliver high-quality education to many
students at much lower cost.

LIFELONG LEARNING & DISTANCE EDUCATION
The term “lifelong learning” is very popular nowadays. It describes the need
for people to continue their education and training throughout their lives.
Lifelong learning is more and more important for everyone because people are
now facing different career choices in changing economies. It is believed
lifelong learning is a crucial response to the challenges of the global
knowledge economy.
Currently, most universities have reacted to the era of lifelong learning by
adding new programs and services for adults who seek to combine employment
with part-time study. Special arrangements have been developed for these
students but the core activity of the university, providing teaching to full-
time young undergraduates, often goes on much as before.
Lifelong learning is both formal and non-formal; and the boundaries between
face-to-face teaching and distance education are increasingly blurred.
By making learning possible anytime and anywhere, distance education is a
powerful tool for supporting lifelong learning. Technology-based teaching is
creating new educational systems that anyone from anywhere can access. The key
challenge for universities is to evolve from a teacher-centered model of
education to student-centered model. The challenge for governments is that
they have to develop new funding approaches and new quality assessment
procedures.

Graffiti painting is traditionally a daredevil pursuit. Teenagers dodge
security guards to put their names on trains and buses. But over the past
decade, graffiti has all but disappeared from Britain's cities. Between 2007
and 2012 the number of incidents of graffiti recorded by the British Transport
Police fell by 63%. A survey by the Environment Ministry shows that fewer
places are blighted by tags than ever. Graffiti are increasingly confined to
sanctioned walls, such as the Stockwell ball courts. In time the practice may
die out entirely.
The most obvious reason for the decline in tagging and train-painting is
better policing. Numerous CCTV cameras mean it is harder to get away with
painting illegally. And punishments are more severe. A generational shift is
apparent, too. Fewer teenagers are getting into painting walls. They prefer to
play with iPads and video games. Some have gone to art school and want to make
money from their paintings. The Internet means that painters can win far more
attention by posting pictures online than they can by breaking into a railway
yard.
Taggers and graffiti artists mostly grew up in the 1980s and 1990s. Those
men—and almost all are men—are now older and less willing to take risks.
Graffiti may eventually disappear. But for now the hobby is almost respectable.
The former graffiti artists paint abandoned warehouses at the weekend. It has
become something to do on a Sunday afternoon—a slightly healthier alternative
to sitting and watching football.

Jim Thorpe was a Native American. He was born in 1888 in an Indian
Territory(印第安人保护区)that is now Oklahoma. Like most Native American
children then, he liked to fish, hunt, swim, and play games outdoors. He was
healthy and strong, but he had very little formal education. In 1950, Jim
Thorpe was named the greatest American football player. He was also an Olympic
gold medal winner. But Thorpe had many tragedies in his life.
Jim had a twin brother who died when he was nine years old. By the time he was
16, his mother and father were also dead, Jim then went to a special school in
Pennsylvania for Native American children. There, he learned to read and write
and also began to play sports. Jim was poor, so he left school for two years
to earn some money. During this time, he played on a baseball team. The team
paid him only $15 a week. Soon he returned to school to complete his education.
Jim was a star athlete (运动员) in several sports, including baseball, running,
and football. He won many awards for his athletic ability, mainly for football.
In many games, he scored all or most of the points for his team.
In 1912, when Jim Thorpe was 24 years old, he became part of the U.S Olympic
team. He competed in two very difficult events: the pentathlon and the
decathlon. Both require great ability and strength. The pentathlon has five
track and field events, including the long jump and the 1500-meter race. The
decathlon has ten track and field events, with running, jumping and throwing
contests.
People thought it was impossible for an athlete to compete in both the
pentathlon and the decathlon. So everyone was surprised when Thorpe won gold
medals in both events. When the King of Sweden presented Thorpe with his two
gold medals, he said, “Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world.”
Thorpe was a simple and honest man. He just answered, “Thanks, King.”

Since its founding in 1948, McDonald's has grown from a family burger(汉堡包)
stand to a global fast-food chain, with more than 30,000 locations in 118
countries.
With 58 million daily customers worldwide, McDonald's is now so ubiquitous
around the globe that The Economist publishes a global ranking of currencies'
purchasing power based on the prices charged at the local McDonald's, called
the Big Mac Index(巨雅霸指数).That's not to say that every nation carries
the same menu items: choices vary widely depending on location. Some Asian
locations serve fried shrimp in a Big Mac roll, while McDonald's in India
doesn't serve beef at all, relying instead on burgers made from vegetables,
rice and beans.
Not everyone in the world has been happy to greet Ronald McDonald when he
moves to town. Many see McDonald's as a symbol of American economic and
cultural chauvinism(沙文主义), and European nations in particular have
viewed American-style fast food as an insult to their national food. A French
farmer, Jose Bove, became something of a national hero in 1999 after he and a
group of people destroyed a McDonald's under construction to protest
globalization and “bad food.” The next year, a bomb exploded in a French
McDonald's, killing a 27-year-old employee. No one claimed responsibility.
But regardless of whether you like their food or their policies, McDonald's is
still widely seen as one of the true pioneers of peaceful globalization.

I've been living in the country for more than 10 years. It means quietness,
privacy, harmony and peace for me.
Living in the country requires an active lifestyle. It involves activities
like doing daily chores, preparing firewood for winter heating, feeding
animals including pets and livestock, tending the garden, or securing fences,
etc. For me, the most attractive activities are fishing, hunting and hiking. I
enjoy seeing what nature has to offer everyday through a simple walk down the
little trail, or a relaxing drive along the country road with patches of green
grass ornamented with wildlife sightings of birds, moose, bears, deer, etc.
Living the country life helps us appreciate some of the simpler things, things
that make us feel good about ourselves and the world. It may be just a get
together on a Saturday at the local farmers market, or a project or a problem
that the community might pull together to help solve. I have participated in a
few community projects, like dealing with out-of-control grass fires, a roof
that collapsed from a large snow fall, or even helping a recent widow with
fire wood for the winter. Sometimes I am surprised by how much benefit we
receive from helping others and as for this community I can’t say enough.

A. FOR MANY STUDENTS
B. A MAJOR BARRIER
C. EQUALITY IN ACCESS TO EDUCATION
D. DIFFERENT PEOPLE
E. NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS
The National Union of Students (NUS) welcomes the news that greater numbers of
black and disabled students are studying at UK universities, but there is
still a lot of work to be done on widening access, writes the union's
president, Gemma Tumelty.
A recent Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) equalities
review showed that significant numbers of potential students felt their
disability was {A; B; C; D; E} to accessing higher education (HE). This is
simply unacceptable.
Equality and diversity is not entirely a “numbers game” and before too much
praise is given we need to hear more from {A; B; C; D; E} , not just about
their experience of accessing higher education but also going through the
system.
Equality in society is absolutely, and fundamentally, linked to {A; B; C; D;
E}.
{A; B; C; D; E}, university is the place where they will be first exposed to
different cultures and {A; B; C; D; E}. As well as fighting for better access,
the NUS wants to see diversity properly valued and promoted within the student
experience. Many pay lip service to the value of diversity, but is this
recognized and promoted as a core asset to those who go through the HE system?
Equality in society can be promoted by equality and diversity at university.
But the benefits of university as a positive, diverse environment must be seen
by students as adding “value” as much as any other factors before the
numbers game is really won by the champions of diversity."

They often use text messages to stay in touch with
Hopefully these types of gyms will successfully grow in numbers in the future.
The idea is a very simple and potentially popular one. If it helps those of us
who are bigger exercise more and improve our fitness level, it's a step in the
right direction.

3. What is the training goal in the gyms catering to overweight members?{A; B;

A. EVEN WITHOUT INTERNATIONAL LINKS
B. CHINESE STUDENTS AND ACADEMICS
C. THE CRISIS ON ECONOMIC GROWTH
D. A STRONG RESEARCH SYSTEM
E. IN PART BECAUSE OF THIS
Education and academic quality can mean different things to different people,
depending on their perspective, role and context and, {A; B; C; D; E}, quality
is notoriously difficult to evaluate. The question of how to do this has been
pursued for many years.
Nevertheless, the goal of improving educational quality is agreed by all and
stimulated further by the recent worldwide economic downturn and the need to
counteract the impact of {A; B; C; D; E} and prepare for economic recovery.
As the World Bank and UNESCO said 10 years ago: “The quality of knowledge
generated within higher education institutions, and its availability to the
wider economy, is becoming increasingly critical to national competitiveness.”
They also rightly emphasized that “{A; B; C; D; E} at the national level
opens up the possibility that substantial additional public benefits can be
realized through international links.”
This is precisely why {A; B; C; D; E} should contribute to these global
benefits, reforming and improving evaluation systems for educational and
academic quality. Original and good research, especially in science, economics
and social sciences, has a trickle-down effect on society. And it offers
additional benefits {A; B; C; D; E}, though international collaboration and
exchange of the best evaluation policy and practice can bring substantial
advantages to all partners in relation to lessons learned elsewhere."

Babies who are breast-fed may be more likely to be successful in life, a new
study published Tuesday suggests. The study followed more than 3,000 babies
into adulthood in Brazil. The researchers found those who were breast-fed
scored slightly higher in intelligence tests in their 30s, stayed in school
longer and earned more money than those who were given formula(配方奶粉).
“Breast-feeding not only has short-term benefits, but also breast-feeding has
long-term benefits, ” says Bernardo Lessa Horta of the Federal University of
Pelotas in Brazil, who led the study being published in The Lancet Global
Health.
Doctors have long known that breast-feeding can be good for a baby's health.
This is especially true in poor countries, where water can be contaminated.
For instance, a baby given formula in developing countries is 14 times more
likely to die in the first six months than one who's breast-fed. In the U.S.,
some research has suggested that breast-feeding may raise a baby's IQ(智商)
by a few points. But a recent study with siblings(兄弟姐妹)found little
advantage to breast-feeding.
Horta says these previous studies didn't follow children into adulthood to see
if breast-feeding had long-term effects. So Horta analyzed data collected from
3,493 volunteers he and his colleagues have been following since birth. They
are now in their 30s. First, the researchers gave the subjects IQ tests. Those
who were breast-fed for 12 months or more had IQ test scores that were 3.76
points higher than those who were breast-fed for less than one month, the team
found.
When Horta and his colleagues looked at how much education the subjects had
gotten and how much money they were making, they also found a clear difference:
Those who were breast-fed the longest stayed in school for about an extra year
and had monthly salaries that were about a third higher.

Liu Hui and Molly are discussing the issue of educational quality at a
workshop.
Liu Hui: Hi, Molly. Today's topic is educational quality. First, what does
educational quality mean to you?
Molly: As far as I'm concerned, quality education means good learning
standards in educational institutions. So, educational quality ensures a
desirable outcome for learners.
Liu Hui: Sounds like after some serious thinking. However, many definitions of
quality in education exist, testifying to the complexity and multifaceted
nature of the concept.
Molly: Definitely, establishing a contextualized understanding of quality
means including relevant stakeholders. Key stakeholders often hold different
views and meanings of educational quality.
Liu Hui: There are many prestigious universities in the US. They all provide
high-quality education. But some universities aren't known for their quality.
It's hard to imagine the gap.
Molly: Yes, in the US the quality in higher education is quite mixed.
Universities like Harvard, Yale, MIT, etc., you know, are well-known all over
the world. However, there are some institutions providing poor education, so
called “diploma mills”.
Liu Hui: In China, we have similar issues in educational quality. Some
universities pay more attention to profits instead of quality.
Molly: How to improve educational quality is an international issue. But,
solutions are grounded in values, cultures and traditions and may be specific
to a given nation as well.

I. READ THE PASSAGE AND CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUB-TITLE (A-D) FOR EACH PARAGRAPH.
A. THE INEXACTITUDE OF LANGUAGE
B. PREVENTING MISUNDERSTANDINGS
C. INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
D. FOSTERING RESPECT
E. AVOIDING CONFLICTS
Para 1 {A; B; C; D; E}
Intercultural communication refers to messages transmitted between members of
two or more different societies. Effective intercultural communication helps
firms avoid conflict, prevent misunderstandings, and foster respect.
Para 2 {A; B; C; D; E}
The workplace is growing more diverse every day. Managers cannot assume that
what they find inoffensive will also be inoffensive to their subordinates. A
lack of sensitivity can lead to claims of discrimination or harassment, which
costs firms big money. Intercultural communication involves exercising
sensitivity and tact to avoid such conflicts.
Para 3 {A; B; C; D; E}
We human beings have developed language to communicate ideas to one another.
Still, our language represents an imperfect form of communication. Sometimes,
words cannot accurately convey an idea, because the information might be
highly complex. Also, a concept that exists in one culture or language might
not be part of another. Effective intercultural communication tries to bridge
language gaps as effectively as possible so that everyone at the workplace
finds themselves on the same page.
Para 4 {A; B; C; D; E}
Given the inexactitude of language, misunderstandings can frequently arise
between people from different cultures when they exchange information. Idioms
often become lost in translation. For example, the English expression “to
shoulder responsibility” translates into Swedish as “be a man for your hat”.
Intercultural communication does not rely on expressions native to a
particular language that could lead to confusion; rather, it relies on clear
messages that all parties understand.
Para 5 {A; B; C; D; E}
Communication happens differently in various cultures. What one society finds
acceptable may be anathema to another. When coworkers from different cultures
do not take these differences into account, not only does communication suffer
but conflicts come to the fore. Effective intercultural communication does not
try to ignore societal differences; rather, it respects the variations among
the human race and enables people to transmit information clearly."

Maggie Walker was born in 1867 in Richmond, Virginia. Her mother was once a
slave in a rich woman's house. When Maggie was very young, a thief killed her
father. Her family was impoverished, so Maggie's mother started doing laundry
in her home. Maggie had to help her. She washed clothes every day, but she
continued to go to school. She was a very good student, especially in math.
After Maggie graduated from high school, she got a job as a teacher. In 1886,
she married Armistead Walker. They had two sons and Maggie stayed home to care
for them. She also volunteered to help a social organization called the Order
of St. Luke. This organization helped African Americans take care of the sick
and bury the dead. Maggie Walker loved the work of the organization. The
organization believed that African Americans should take care of each other.
Over the years, Maggie Walker had more and more responsibilities with the
organization. In 1895, she suggested that St. Luke begin a program for young
people. This program became very popular with schoolchildren. In 1899, Walk
became Grand Secretary Treasurer of the St. Luke organization. However,
because she was a woman, she received less than half the salary of the man who
had the job before her.
The Order of St. Luke had a lot of financial difficulties when Walker took
over. It had a lot of unpaid bills and only $31.61 in the bank. But soon
Maggie Walker changed all of that. Her idea was to get new members to join the
Organization. In just a few years, it grew from 3,400 members to 50,000
members. The organization bought a $100,000 office building and increased its
staff to 55. Now Walker was ready for her next big step.

All communication begins with the sender and ends with the receiver. The
sender is responsible for successful conveyance. The sender's personality,
beliefs, cultural and educational background all influence the message and it
is important for the sender to be aware of this as he or she is encoding the
message. Simply put, encoding is translating information into symbols that
represent the ideas or concepts of the message that needs sending. These
symbols are usually words in written or spoken form. To ensure successful
communication, the sender should know as much about his or her audience – the
receiver – as possible in order to focus and support the encoding process.
In addition to this awareness of self and encoding, the sender must choose the
proper channel for conveying the message. Using the wrong channel may result
in miscommunication. Like the sender, receivers are influenced by internal
factors: their personality, their receptivity to the message or their
relationship to the sender. Additionally, their current feelings, mood, or
state of mind can affect a message. Once the message moves through the channel,
the receiver then decodes it. The receiver uses his or her own experience and
the context of the message to interpret its meaning.
Feedback is the return message from the receiver to the sender. It is feedback
that enables the sender to know whether the message was received successfully
or not. Therefore it is essential to the communication process.
This process, though very common, is fraught with potential breakdown at every
turn. Spoken or written language is inherently easy to misinterpret. In
conclusion, effective and successful Communication takes place when the
message is successfully received and the receiver provides the sender with
desirable feedback.
1. The sender's gender also influences the message.{T; F}
2. Encoding is a process that translating information into symbols which serve
as the ideas or concepts of the message that will be sent later.{T; F}

Charity is a concept which dates back to Biblical times, when helping the poor
was something that rich people basically did to make themselves feel good.
Social work has its roots in charity, as it originally began around the time
of the industrial revolution when there were many poor people and society was
seeking a way of dealing with the poor and social problems. Although social
work began as charity work, it has expanded a lot and needs to be seen from a
completely different perspective.
Modern-day social work deals not only with poverty and the subsequent problems,
but also with the problems arising from various types of “social fear”
(“social phobias”) and discrimination such as sexism, racism, and
discrimination against an individual due to his age, or mental or physical
disabilities. Social workers deal with the consequences of these
discriminations as well as consequences that arise from sexual abuse, drug
abuse, and various other problems.
Social work provides an important service to society. Individuals and families
in need of help are the focus of it, and are re  ferred to as clients. Social
workers help clients live a productive life in their own community. In order
to reach this goal, they often enlist the assistance of family members,
relatives, local religious leaders, and other influential members of the
community. Although institutionalization may be necessary at times, it is a
temporary solution. Social workers usually serve in the front line, and reach
out to the clients soon after problems occur. The goal is to help clients
return to normal life in a natural setting.
1. The charity originally means to {A; B; C}.
A. help the poor that makes the rich feel good.
B. help clients return to normal life.
C. serve the whole society.
2. When does social work begin?{A; B; C}
A. around the time of the industrial revolution
B. Biblical times
C. modern time
3. Modern-day social work deals with the following problems except {A; B; C}?
A. poverty
B. racism
C. education
4. In order to help clients live a productive life, social workers can turn to
the assistance of {A; B; C}.
A. government
B. family members
C. businessmen
5. Which statement about social work is NOT True?{A; B; C}
A. Social work roots from charity.
B. Social work deals not only with poverty and the subsequent problems, but
also with various social fear and discrimination.
C. Social work is that the rich people want to help the poor people."

When Bill de Blasio ran for New York City mayor last year, he promised to end
a controversial (有争议的), citywide cell-phone ban(禁令)in public schools,
which is not equally enforced in all schools. Now, under his leadership, the
city is preparing to end the ban. It will be replaced by a policy that allows
phones inside schools but tells students to keep them packed away during class.
Many schools have a rule about enforcing the ban that says, “If we don't see
it, we don't know about it.” That means teachers are OK with students
bringing in cell phones, as long as they stay out of sight and inside bags and
pockets.
But at the 88 city schools with metal detectors, die ban has been strictly
enforced. The detectors were installed to keep weapon out of schools, but the
scanners(扫描器)can also detect cell phones. So students at these schools
must leave their phones at home or pay someone to store it for them.
The ban was put into place in 2007 under mayor Michael Bloomberg. Ending the
ban will also likely end an industry that has sprung up near dozens of the
schools that enforce the ban. Workers in vans(厢式货车)that resemble food
tracks store teens' cell phones and Other devices for a dollar a day,
Critics of the ban say cell phones are important safety devices for kids
during an emergency. They also say that enforcement of the ban is uneven and
discriminatory. Where the ban is enforced, it puts a disadvantage on students
who can't afford to pay to store their phones.
Before putting an official end to the cell-phone ban, city education officials
are working on creating a new policy. It will include rules about not using
the phones during class or to cheat on tests.
1. Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?{A; B; C}

Imagine a school that expected its students to become literate(有读写能力的)
without any formal instruction. Most parents would be alarmed by such an
approach, which would leave their children confused and with gaps in their
understanding. This however has been the philosophy on character development
in many of our schools. Why is the development of character seen as somehow
different from the other skills that we teach?
Of course there will always be learning by osmosis(耳濡目染)in any school, but
as a teacher and primary school head I have found that a child's moral
literacy is strengthened when they acquire the building blocks of good
character such as consideration, courage and honor: qualities which are
commonly known as virtue(美德).
I personally find that exploring a virtue over a two-week period provides a
simple and effective program that allows for the creative input of both
teacher and student and a chance for the virtue to embed(使融入)itself. Once a
lesson on a virtue such as honesty has been completed we need to allow time
for children to practice this concept just as would be the case with fractions
or verbs. Allowing children to role play a situation such as making up excuses
to cover a mistake can be enormously interesting, and the drama can be frozen
allowing the characters to be questioned about their feelings and motives.
It's also a safe way for children to experience for themselves how a lie
usually goes out of control.
Our role as educators is also to look for opportunities to help our students
as they attempt to strengthen their characters. When something goes wrong we
guide the young person to the virtue that will prevent it from happening again.
For instance, when am student thoughtlessly disturbs the calm atmosphere of
the library, instead of a response such as, ""that was really disrespectful
and selfish of you!"" we draw out from them the required virtue: ""When you're
walking through the library, what virtues do you need to use?""
1. Which of the following is the main idea of this passage?{A; B; C}
A. Teaching morals and values has been a frequently discussed topic in the
past few years.
B. The author and his staff embed virtues into lessons and school life to
encourage character development in children.
C. Kids throughout the population face the same needs, the same challenges,
and the same realities in their lives.

A. there tends to be disagreement about what character education is
B. most parents are not satisfied with the teaching methods adopted in schools

Respondent: Binhai People's Hospital
Address: No 7, Binhai Road, Binhai City
The following answer is given to Zhang Hua's claim for personal-injury
compensation by the Binhai People's Hospital:
1. The respondent does not have a direct contractual relationship with Zhang
Hua. Zhang Hua had an oral contract to remove the high-voltage meter cabinet
with Binhai No. 2 Construction Installation Company on June 10, 2008. He was
assigned by Binhai No. 2 Construction and Installation Company and therefore
has no direct contractual relationship with the respondent.
2. Binhai No. 2 Construction and Installation Company should be responsible
for compensating Zhang Hua for the following reasons. Firstly, according to
PRC laws and relevant judicial interpretations, Binhai No. 2 Construction and
Installation Company shall be responsible for any injury employees suffered in
the contract performance. Secondly, Zhang Hua seriously violated the
operational procedure in removing the high-voltage meter cabinet and failed to
pay due attention thereto.
3. The respondent shall not be responsible for compensating the injuries of
Zhang Hua. According to the General Principles of the Civil Law, any person
engaged in highly dangerous operations shall be responsible for compensation.
In this case, the respondent entered into a contract with Binhai No. 2
Construction and Installation Company, whereby the source of high danger
shifted to Binhai No. 2 Construction and Installation Company. Binhai No. 2
Construction and Installation Company became the subject of the dangerous
operation, and therefore any damages caused in the contract performance by
Binhai No. 2 Construction and Installation Company have no connection with the
respondent.
Therefore, Binhai People's Hospital is not liable for compensating Zhang Hua.
We hereby request the court to reject the plaintiff's action according to law.

Is that 6 a.m. wokeout getting in the way of good sleep? Don't think your fat
cells won't notice. A new study published in The Annals of Internal Medicine
(a medical journal) finds that inadequate shut-eye has a harmful effect on fat
cells, reducing their ability to respond to insulin (胰岛素) by about 30
percent. Over the long-term, this decreased response could set the stage for
type-2 diabetes (a medical condition in which someone has too much sugar in
his or her blood), fatty liver disease and weight gain.
The study adds to a growing body of evidence that there' “an intimate
relationship between the amount of sleep we get and our ability to maintain a
good, healthy body weight,” says sleep expert Helene Emsellem, director of
the Center for Sleep and Wake Disorders in Chevy Chase, Maryland. But
Americans don't seem to be getting the message that we need seven to nine
hours par night. More than 1 in 5 of us, according to a report from the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is getting six or fewer hours of
sleep per night, on average.
So how did researchers study fat cells in the Annals paper? Matthew Brady of
the University of Chicago and a group of colleagues selected and persuaded
seven volunteers to take part in the research project. They were all young,
thin and healthy and agreed to sleep for eight nights in a sleep lab. “For
four nights they were allowed to stay in bed for 8.5 hours a night,” says
Brady. Then, a month later, they came back for four additional nights——but
this time they were allowed just 4.5 hours of sleep per night. And after each
visit, researchers got a sample of their fat. Brady explains that the fat
cells responded significantly to the loss of sleep. “I was very surprised to
be honest,” he says.
Bad things can happen when fat cells become less responsive to insulin. “Fat
cells are actually your friend,” he says. “They're there to store lipids (血

you're exercising or sleeping or going about your day. “However, when fat
cells stare to become insulin resistant, the lipids star to leach out of the
fat cells and rise in the bloodstream,” Brady says.

ALTERNATIVE LEGAL BILLING – WIN STRATEGIES
Hourly billing is the best way to be charged for legal services. About 95
percent of lawyers still perform their legal work on an hourly basis. If you
want something better than the old “bill by the hour” deal, try presenting
one of these billing structures.
PROJECT BILLING FOR ROUTINE ISSUES
If your legal needs include large but repetitive tasks, consider a flat-fee
approach. Once you get a project billing estimate, don't hesitate to shop
around to compare prices and services with other law firms. A firm may provide
a better deal if it expects future work from your company.
RESULTS-ORIENTED OPTIONS
“Pay-according-to-success” is one choice. It considers fees based on the
outcome of the case and the performance of your counsel. Contingency fees turn
the matter into a shared risk or shared encouragement, making the law firm
your business partner, not just representation.
MULTI-LAYERED TASKS
If you're shopping for a firm for actual legal work involving a number of
legal specialties, consider using blended hourly fees. The firm calculates in
advance an “average” rate based on the anticipated time each lawyer spends
on the matter.
This arrangement helps the client to avoid paying a senior partner's hourly
rate for research that should be conducted by a junior associate.
Legal “Insurance”
The contract fee allows the client to pick up the phone and talk to the lawyer
without needing to eye the clock. This approach works like a legal insurance
policy. It encourages companies to contact their counsel on non-litigation,
non-crisis matters, and to save money in the long run by engaging in more
preventive legal action.

4. Legal work involving a number of legal specialties should consider using {A;
B; C}.
A. blended hourly fees
B. insurance fees
C. hourly fees
5. You have to eye the clock when you talk to the lawyer when you choose {A; B;

NEW YORK – The five men facing trial in the Sept. 11 attacks will plead not
guilty. They would state their criticisms of U.S. foreign policy, the lawyer
for one of the defendants said Sunday.
Scott Fenstermaker, the lawyer for accused terrorist Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali, said
the men would not deny their role in the 2001 attacks but “would explain what
happened and why they did it.”
Ali and four other men are accused of killing nearly 3,000 people in the
nation's deadliest terrorist attack. The U.S. Justice Department announced
earlier this month that they will face a civilian federal trial just blocks
from the World Trade Center site.
Ali is also known as Ammar al-Baluchi. He is a nephew of claimed 9/11 planner,
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
Mohammed, Ali and the others will explain “their assessment of American
foreign policy,” Fenstermaker said.
“Their assessment is negative,” he said.
Fenstermaker met with Ali last week at the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay in
Cuba. He has not spoken with the others. But he said the men have discussed
the trial among themselves.
Fenstermaker was first quoted in The New York Times in Sunday's editions.
Critics of Attorney General Eric Holder decided to try the men in a New York
City civilian courthouse. It has warned that the trial would provide the
defendants with a propaganda platform.
Dean Boyd, a spokesman for the Department of Justice, said Sunday that while
the men may attempt to use the trial to express their views, “we believe the
courts and the federal judge may govern the trial. The course of justice will
be led appropriately and with minimal break, as federal courts have done in
the past.”
1. The five men thought that the U.S. foreign policy should be blamed for the
911 attack.{T; F}
2. Scott Fenstermaker is the lawyer for Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali and four other
men.{T; F}
3. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 911 attack.{T; F}
