Case 1

Is the Danish Woman Wrong?

In 1997, a Danish woman from Copenhagen left her 14-month-old baby girl in a stroller outside a Manhattan restaurant while she was inside. Other diners at the restaurant became concerned and called New York City Police. The woman was charged with endangering a child and was jailed for two nights.Her child was placed in foster care. The woman and the Danish consulate explained that leaving children unattended outside cafes is common in Denmark.Pictures were wired to the police showing numerous strollers parked outside cafes while parents were eating inside.

Question: What cultural phenomenon can be reflected?Case 2

The following dialogue occurs between a Chinese employee Wang and his American boss Andy.

Andy wants Wang to do extra work on Saturday, but Wang doesn’t want to work on Saturday because it’s going to be his son's birthday.

A: It looks like we're going to have to keep the production line running on Saturday.

W: I see.

A: Can you come in on Saturday?

W: Yes, I think so.

A: That l be a great help.

W: Yes, Saturday is a special day, did you know?

A: What do you mean?

W: It’s my son’s birthday.

A: How nice. I hope you all enjoy it very much.

W: Thank you. I appreciate your understanding.

Questions:

What does the Chinese employee mean by saying “I see”? Does it mean agreement, acceptance or         promise?

To the direct request “Can you come in on Saturday,” what should the Chinese employee say to         avoid further misunderstanding?

Why does the American boss fail to understand what the Chinese employee implies by saying “It’s         my son’s birthday”? Why does the Chinese fail to say “no”?

II. Answer the following questions: (50%)

What are the differences of friendship between the Chinese and American culture?
