When I was a boy growing up in New York in the 1960s, we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr. White. He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a five-year-old boy, I couldn’t take my eyes off the coins in his pocket. He noticed this one day during the delivering of milk and gave me a coin as a small gift.
Of course, he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on. If we needed to change our order, my mother would write a note — “Please add a bottle of buttermilk next day” — and placed it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would come.2. 请将以下段落翻译为汉语(25分)。(必做题)
Psychologically there are two dangers to be guarded against in old age. One of these is undue absorption in the past. It does not do to live in memories, in regrets for the good old days, or in sadness about friends who are dead. One’s thoughts must be directed to the future, and to things about which there is something to be done. This is not always easy; one’s own past is a gradually increasing weight. It is easy to think to oneself that one’s emotions used to be more vivid than they are, and one’s mind more keen. If this is true it should be forgotten, and if it is forgotten it will probably not be true.3. 请将以下段落翻译为汉语(25分)。(选做题)
Historically, balancing both economic goals is difficult. The guns part of the equation increasingly weighs on the US economy, considering that the war in Iraq and other missions in Afghanistan and Africa cost between $ 3 billion and $ 5 billion a day. The butter side of the economy also has challenges, including a massive buildup in household debt, a lack of prudent fiscal policies in Washington and a housing meltdown. The consumer relied on home equity and low mortgage rates — assured by foreign purchase of US debt ― to finance their ongoing shopping binge.4. 请将以下段落翻译为汉语(25分)。(选做题)
Socrates (苏格拉底) and his wife did not agree with each other. She nagged and nagged and nagged till she got tired nagging, and then she scolded till she got tired scolding and then she started to nag all over again. Some men go out and get drunk and others jump into the river under such conditions. Socrates went out on the street. He couldn’t get a “thin” word in “edgewise” at home and so he talked to everybody on the street. When a man said, “Socrates, it’s a nice day,’ he asked, “What do you mean by a ‘nice day’? If it were this way every day, we’d all starve to death. The umbrella man would go broke.” Then he would go to another man and finally they accused him of being the brightest man in the whole community and he said, “I plead guilty. I’m the brightest man that ever lived. I know I know nothing and I’ve met no one that knows that much.”5. 请将以下段落翻译为汉语(25分)。(选做题)
The physical distance between speakers can indicate a number of things and can also be used to consciously send messages about intent. Closeness, for example, indicates intimacy or threat to many speakers whilst distance may denote formality or a lack of interest. Proximity is also both a matter of personal style and is often culture-bound so that what may seem normal to a speaker from one culture may appear unnecessarily close or distant to a speaker from another. And standing close to someone may be quite appropriate in some situations such as an informal party, but completely out of place in others, such as meeting with a superior. Posture can convey meaning too. Hunched shoulders and a hanging head give a powerful indication of mood. A lowered head when speaking to a superior can convey the appropriate relationship in some cultures.
